Information

The Sicilian blood orange, as the name reveals, comes from the Italian island of the same name. The volcanic soil and fluctuations in temperature around Mount Etna create the anthocyanin pigments. On Sicily the temperature difference between night and day can fluctuate by as much as 15°C.

This not only leads to the particularly intensive red of the fruit but also means blood oranges are a health-boosting, natural source of antioxidants. But the nutritional benefits don’t stop there: similar to oranges, they are very rich in vitamin C and can help with high blood pressure - as two glasses of blood orange juice per day can lead to improved blood pressure values. A healthy fruit which should not be underestimated.

Good to know

  • Blood oranges are mainly processed into juice on Sicily
